No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update starts with a quick rundown of what NFTs are, including a note about their extreme volatility, before laying out the current policies for Minecraft servers. The overall goal of those policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a place where everyone can access the same content." NFTs on the other hand, are specifically designed to "create models of exclusion and scarcity," which is clearly in contradiction to the principle. They're out.

Mojang has stated that blockchain technology were not permitted to be integrated into our client or server applications, nor could Minecraft in-game content like worlds, skins and persona items be used by blockchain technology to create a unique digital asset.

The update was apparently inspired by the fact that many Minecraft-associated NFTs and play-to-earn servers are already available making use of the lapse in the official policy, and dividing the community into "the haves and the not-so-haves," Mojang said.

Another issue is that certain NFTs "may not be trustworthy and could end up costing those who purchase them," which is a very polite way to put it the unofficial Minecraft NFT game Blockverse (opens in a new tab), which disappeared with more than $1.2 million in January, is just one of many examples of NFT-related malfeasance (opens in new tab) and criminality (opens in a new tab) we've witnessed over the past few years. This is particularly relevant to Minecraft because its users tend to be younger than other games, which makes it likely to be more susceptible to scams.

The official Minecraft usage guidelines (opens in a new tab) are being revised to address the issue in greater detail, however the most basic version is a no-no: "NFTs associated with any in-game content, including skins, worlds, items, or any other mods" are not allowed.

That's not necessarily the end of it: Mojang has said it will continue to track the advancement of blockchain technology to determine whether it can "enable more secure gaming experiences or other applications that are practical and inclusive in gaming," suggesting that official support for blockchain technology could be a possibility in the near future. For now, though, "we have no plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft."
